My review of Prometheus

With Prometheus(2012),Ridley scott returns to the alien world after a woefully long time of 30 years. In between, scott tried his mettle with period dramas, epic war sagas, psychological thrillers but what seems obvious is the clear inspiration and his obvious preference to a visually visceral canvas and 20th century fox clearly has a backing as much as it could after the epic response to the James cameron directed Avatar. Now,the canvas of scott's Prometheus is much larger compared to most of his recent flicks. The early sequences are dazzingly beautiful, the climax is hurriedly shot amidst real locations in iceland, england, scotland and spain.
PLOT: A sequential biogenetic reaction from its DNA gets started after a spacecraft departs and a humanoid alien drinks a dark bubbly liquid and his body appears to have cascaded amidst the waterfalls.
Years later,(2089) we are told,a group of scientists find unconnected pictures and a star map believing it to be invitations from mankind's creator.Peter weyland, the CEO of weyland corporation, invites a group of scientists and funds a mission to a far distant moon LV-223.The rest of the story revolves around how the group of scientists,an Android David(played to perfection by Michael fassbender(shame, inglorious basterds),survive on the distant moon and struggle to eliminate the threat that could cause the extinction of human race.

PRO'S:
Much of Prometheus appealing to a chunk of the audience depends upon the mood you are in,and that is exactly what ridley scott is expecting of an audience. With Prometheus, scott wants the audience to capitulate to the visually enthralling ride and succeeds,to an extent.

Some scenes are expertly crafted, like that opening scene of the humanoid alien or that scene where noomy rapace(the girl with the dragon tattoo) does a ceasarean operation on herself to remove the alien in her ovary that resulted after supposedly having an intercourse with fellow scientist and husband played by Logan marshall green, who was earlier infected by an alien. It is scenes like these, that promise much for the later half, but unfortunately,Prometheus never becomes a sum of its parts and ends up as a visceral sci-fi adventure that holds you enjoy till it lasts, but is not fondly recalled minutes after you exit the theatre.

CON'S:
Not enough meat is given to the screenplay, where the 2nd half drags and drags and the climax looks hurried amidst the rising count of deaths.Unlike Alien and the consistently engaging Blade runner, prometheus doesnt provide that scene stealing or spine chilling sequences that would make you wake up in your seat. But,what prometheus manages to do so,and in suffice,is in the visual department.
  Verdict:

Die hard Ridley scott fans are likely to cherish this, but not for too long. Those comparing it to Scott's ALIEN and BLADE RUNNER or to James Cameron's ALIENS will not relish it with much fervour.

RATING:

2.5/5
